Grandma's Favorite, a DePaul Capstone Film

For the last four years, Alora Johnson has been developing her craft as a filmmaker at DePaul university. In the final quarter of Senior year she has written her directorial debut, Grandma’s Favorite, a story that explores the complexity of familial versus individual identity, and how it changes as we grow. Alora was inspired to tell this story to showcase part of the Black experience that isn’t always told. This film is a love letter to the Black family, queer joy, and being true to yourself.

The film follows Mariah, a young adult, whose plans to explore romantic relationships as a partially-closeted lesbian are thwarted by her well-meaning, but clueless Christian grandmother.

Co-Produced by Nicola Anderson and Lola Reech, this story is a labor of love from Seniors excited to complete their final film as college students.

All money raised will go to feeding cast and crew, securing locations, and sourcing props for the film. We truly appreciate the help and cannot wait to bring this story to life!
