2020 was a hard year for many of us, and sadly many of us have lost loved ones and endured life-changing struggles. Our family was no exception, and on Thursday, January 21st, we lost our grandmother, Martha Orantes, or as we liked to call her, Grandma Mimi.
Grandma Mimi was fortunate to get the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on December 30th, after receiving a negative test result. There were a couple of positive cases in her nursing home, so she was retested, and unfortunately came back positive this time on January 10th. The nurses and our family were hopeful that she would pull through, especially since she had the strength to survive a stroke in 2004 and had persevered many physical ailments since, however, her condition worsened at a rapid rate. On January 12th, we got the call from the doctor to let us know she had complete renal failure and acute respiratory failure and they were giving her 48-72 hours to live. All we could do was keep her as comfortable as possible. But just like Grandma Mimi, she persevered for a little longer, and nine days later she left us.
Grandma Mimi was a spunky, and very loving grandmother, mother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was resilient and fiercely independent, despite her physical ailments. She loved to laugh and was a beloved fixture at her nursing home. You could always find her cracking jokes, flirting with the residents and staff, dancing to her favorite Celia Cruz, and pranking her roommates during Bingo. She befriended everyone easily and her love ran deep.
Please consider helping our family as we navigate through this incredibly difficult time and move forward with life without her and prepare for her end of life wishes. All donations will be going towards her end of life costs and services, and the donations will go directly to Grandma Mimi’s daughter, Dalila, to pay for the costs and services needed.
We know that these are hard times but every little bit will tremendously help our family honor Grandma Mimi as we all remember and love her.
We love you so much Grandma Mimi and miss you dearly. Rest in peace. You will forever be missed.
