Grandma loses home of 30 years to fire

On Sunday, my mother experienced a devastating tragedy. Her house has burnt down and is now uninhabitable. She only has the clothes on her back and family with little to no resources.

I received a call around midnight from a neighbor that her house was on fire. When I arrived, the roof was gone and the fire was put out. She was walking in pain and couldn't comprehend what was happening. She woke her other roommate and then ran down the street half dressed knocking on doors for help after alerting everyone in the home to evacuate.

There was an open investigation on what caused the fire and was later ruled a lithium ion battery from an electric bike. The battery caught fire and a tenant tried to extinguish it by smothering it with a blanket which fed the fire up a wall in the garage. The wall had open access to the attic where an ember engulfed the insulation. Unfortunately, this home was built before fire retaining walls became code so the entire roof was gone within minutes.

I took her to the hospital with a BP of 230/170 which is scary considering she had a debilitating stroke 2 years ago. She was describing back pain and an x-ray revealed she has a broken rib on her back side and a compression fracture in her spine.

I will pick her up from the hospital hopefully soon and connect her with the limited medicare resources including Red Cross.

There was not home insurance so the clean up and repairs are out of pocket and we need help! I understand not everyone is in a place to offer financial assistance but we need support. I'm asking for help in whatever way you can. Thank you for prayers and positive thoughts
