Grandma Ignacia - Help Grandma Ignacia Recover
Donation protected
On October 8th, 2019, our beloved 99 year old grandma Ignacia was traveling to Tennessee from Venezuela, with hopes to meet two of her great-grandkids (Mateo and Rafael) and to attend her grandsons' college graduation. Due to her age and the length of the trip, she stopped in Panama to rest for a day and continue her journey the next day.
As she was getting ready to head to the airport, she fainted and hit her head. Grandma was immediately taken to a private hospital where the family was informed that she suffered a stroke due to high blood pressure. After a couple of days, the medical bills added up very quickly, due to the high cost, she was transferred to a public hospital where she has been since.
She has been taken care of by a group of professionals in Panama, visits for family members and friends are limited to an hour window, which is restricted to a one-person a day. During this time Grandma Ignacia is sometimes awake, sometimes sleep. Due to her age and condition Doctors are not able to determine if the medication is causing her drowsiness.
Even though we are very grateful for her slow recuperation, at this point, Grandma is partially paralyzed not able to walk, talk or eat. She is able to open her eyes during short periods of time and move her right arm occasionally. Currently, he is being fed through a nasogastric tube (NG tube) is a special tube that carries food and medicine to the stomach through the nose.
Doctors say it's a waiting game since there is nothing else they can do. We have been advised to take her home, before Grandma is released, she needs a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) so she can be fed thought her stomach and be moved to a nursing home to recover; even though, the Doctors are the ones recommending the surgery, they will not approve the transfer to a different facility nor perform the surgery.
Currently, we are unsure of how long her recuperation process will take. As a result of her condition and possible complications, Grandma Igancia is not able to fly back home, Venezuela. We are afraid it will be a long and costly process before she can go back. For now, she will need to recover in Panama. Fortunately, her daughters were able to travel to Panama to take care of Grandma.
Although we are a united family, we still don't have the means necessary to cover all medical bills, future surgeries, and stay in Panama. Just her monthly medical expenses are over $1500, plus any additional therapy she might need in the future.
All those who have met our grandmother can tell you that she is one of the sweetest, most loving, giving woman there is. She raised three children on her own by working hard. She always remembered birthdays and phone numbers to communicate with her loved ones, at 99 years old!
She would always had an extra place at her table, even if you showed up uninvited. No matter how little she had, leaving loved ones with an empty stomach was never an option. Now it's time for all of us to come together and help Grandma recover.
All the money raised will go towards hospitals, nursing-home, medications and any therapy sessions needed in the future.
Anything helps, even a small prayer, and it is greatly appreciated from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you in advance and we are all hoping for a speedy recovery.
