GrAiNZ was conceived by a small group of bakers from different Australian cities as an opportunity to create community, and share knowledge and ideas. Originally called BreadEd, the gathering was open to professionals and home bakers in an inclusive environment and attracted keen bread-heads from across Australia and New Zealand.
Since that first event in 2013, the scope of our gathering has grown to include interests from all areas of our regional grain economy – from farmers to millers, and from maltsters to brewers, and more. This evolution necessitated a change of name to include a broader spectrum of grain professionals, and GrAiNZ was born.
GrAiNZ is run by an un-incorporated committee of people with a vision. Last year we nearly lost the event to a corporate entity hoping to capilitise on what we had started. For this reason there was no GrAiNZ 2018, and also for this reason we knew GrAiNZ 2019 had to be special – an event that rewards and strengthens our community and their commitment to this movement.
Hosted by John Reid at RedBeard Historic Bakery in Trentham, Victoria, GrAiNZ 2019 has seen international guest bakers and scientists on the program for the first time – Dr Stephen Jones (Washington State University, USA), Kimberley Bell (Small Food Bakery, UK), Graison Gill (Bellegarde Bakery, USA) and Delphine Sicard (INRA, French National Research Institute of Agronomy) have all impressed with their generosity and knowledge.
Bruce Pascoe (author of Dark Emu) and Reg Abrahams (Wauthurong Aboriginal Coop) have highlight Australia’s indigenous grain history, and potential future.
No dream has been dismissed, and no expense spared. From hosting international guests and top shelf AV equipment, to live streaming of the event for our international family, we’ve committed to creating a broad and exciting program accessible to as many people as possible. In the wash up we are looking at a significant financial shortfall, and we are now seeking support from our community so that we can continue this movement with future events. We’re not asking for a big burden to be carried by one, which is how it currently stands. We are asking for a little burden to be carried by many. All free will gifts will strengthen GrAiNZ and ensure its sustainability for the future!
