On the morning of April 21, 2023, Graham was found unconscious in his bed. Doctors at the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) determined that Graham had an aneurysm, which is a weakened area in an artery that causes it to bulge or balloon out. In this case, in his right frontal lobe. The aneurysm leaked and caused a hematoma, which put enormous pressure on his brain, causing him to go into a coma. We don’t know why this happened. He didn’t fall, and there’s no family history. Quite a few people actually have aneurysms and never even know it, because they don’t always cause problems. Graham has had several surgeries to treat the aneurysm and manage swelling in his brain, including removing a portion of his skull.

Graham continues to fight hard and has been responding to questions from staff and family. He wiggles his toes, nods and makes hand gestures with his right hand. Thumbs up, Graham!

The road to recovery will be long. We expect Graham will be in the HCMC Pediatric ICU for about a month, followed by months of inpatient rehabilitation, with physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and then an as yet unknown amount of outpatient care.
