Grad Student In Need After Car Accident
Donation protected
At about 8:45 am on September 18th 2019, I hopped in my car for a doctors appointment. After a few minutes on the highway, my car rapidly began to swerve. I tried to regain control, but my car took a sharp left toward the median and I braced myself for impact. The airbags deployed and I went tumbling. The kind strangers who came running over as they witnessed the crash told me that my car flipped over three times.
Not only did I survive the accident, but I walked out of my completely totaled, upside down car with nothing but scraped up limbs and bruises. I’ve been told I‘m lucky, blessed, even a miracle. Though I walked away with the most important thing - my life - I suffered a major loss with rippling effects.
I nearly refused an x-ray the day of the accident and chastised myself for not calling an Uber to the hospital instead of taking an ambulance. My incredibly hard working, single mother doesn’t want me to worry about money but I know she’s just being strong for me. She’s already doing everything in her power to support me and I don’t want to add the weight of hospital bills and a car for her to carry.
I’m 22 and new to the area; I’ve been here just shy of two months. I started my MSW at Clark Atlanta, full time, a month ago and moved into my first apartment two weeks before the accident. I have medical bills, no car, and no job. On top of that, I’m trying to balance being in my first semester of a rigorous graduate school program accompanied by a 20+ hour per week unpaid internship. I was in search of a job when the accident occurred but now I’m not sure when I’ll be able to factor one in. When I do, most employers are reluctant to hire people without reliable transportation aka a car.
I don’t take asking for money lightly, every dollar will go toward:
· Medical bills
· Public transportation/ride sharing until I’m able to get a new car
· Getting a new car (if you or someone you know could gift me a car, that would also be a great help)
· Cost of living
Anything you can do helps: whether it's $1 or sharing my link to help get the word out. I just want to get back to normal as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I’m a big believer in helping others so I will pay it forward when I'm able.
