After many years of anticipation Gracie has finally received both her kidney and liver transplant and is recovering well! She is currently adjusting to the side effects of her new anti-rejection medications, which she will need to take long-term to help her body accept the new organs.
For the first three months— the most critical period— she will be followed very closely by UCLA, with weekly lab draws and regular follow-up visits. During this time, Gracie will not be able to attend school, as the immunosuppressant medications intentionally lower her immune system to protect the transplanted organs. Nicasio and I will alternate taking time off work to care for her and get her to all her appointments.
As her medication doses are gradually reduced, she will be able to be around more people and eventually return to school. For now, she takes approximately 30 medications each day to support her body, protect the new organs, and replace nutrients affected by her treatments. She is moving more each day, growing stronger, and making steady progress in her recovery.
We want to sincerely thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the love, support, and prayers you have shown our family. We are deeply grateful.
