UPDATE: Harper received her new lungs on 6/15/24 and is recovering from surgery. She has many outpatient appointments with several different departments such as but not limited to: pulmonology, cardiology, nuerology, gastroenterology, opthamology, hematology, physical and occupational therapy, palliative care, etc.
Harper has recently undergone a second surgery for a g button placement to administer multiple life-saving transplant medications daily.
Harper Ryals is my 5 year old daughter who was suffering extreme cyanosis and hypoxemia due to her very rare form of Hereditary Hemmorhagic Telangiectasia (hht). She had multiple micro-pulmonary arterioveinous malformations (pavm) that covered her lungs and one large arterioveinous malformation (avm) in the right occipital lobe of her brain that will need intervention later on. She is rare on top of rare and there is no cure or long term treatment options for her particular disease or current state. She's one in a million! Unfortunately, the only choice to potentially prolong her life and give her a fighting chance for a better quality of life was a double lung transplant, which came with MANY risks. Without transplant, time was ticking for her life expectancy. She was on continuous supplemental oxygen. Harper sees a variety of specialists to manage her health in MS, LA and TX. She was a candidate for a double lung transplant, and was listed on April 2, 2024 to receive new lungs at TexasChildren'sHospital in Houston, TX. After a little over 2 months of waiting, she got the call and had a double lung transplant on June 15, 2024. Most, but not all, of her medical costs are covered by her state insurance plan. This does not include cost of travel or any other unforseen expenses. She will receive definitive care throughout the rest of her life, as her disease and symptoms do not have a cure. She will be traveling back and forth very frequently from MS, LA, and TX for multiple outpatient clinic appointments and procedures for the rest of her life and well as will be taking mutiple life-saving medications for the rest of her life, which can get very costly. If anyone is willing and able to donate, all funds will be directly deposited into Harper's own account, managed solely by her mother Rebecca Newman, and receipts will be provided for any disclosure.
