Kelvin Nivens, Owner and Coach of CrossFit Kel-Core, is one of those rare individuals that is hard to believe exists. A friend and mentor who is patient, warm, genuine, and extremely knowledgeable, Kelvin is beloved by everyone who is lucky enough to know him. He is a devoted father and generous member of this community.
Before COVID19 disrupted life as we know it, Kelvin worked 14-hour days, ensuring his Kel-Core Warriors were well taken care of. His sharp eye and thoughtful programming, combined with his mastery of the art of coaching gave us real results. Kelvin has provided our community with unequivocal support, brilliance, devotion, skill and validation. His dedication to each one of us has forged tremendous personal transformations while helping us navigate through physical, mental and emotional healing. When Kelvin battled cancer several years ago, he continued to teach classes and keep his gym open for our benefit. Kelvin confronted cancer with grace and fortitude. He showed us what life is really worth and continued to give back to others. Kelvin has faced the challenges of being a black business owner in a predominantly white community. In a time of tremendous pain and division, Kelvin has shared the truth with love, sincerity and wit. Kelvin has a gift with language and calls his gym floor “a canvas where athletic artistry is performed” while inviting us to “contribute to the mural”. When a client questions Kelvin about a lift or a move, he responds with an acumen and perception that is truly remarkable. Kelvin will always keep it real and tell us what may be hard to hear. He keeps us safe by reminding us the ego is our enemy. If you walk into Kelvin’s gym and really listen, you will be rewarded with the sound of Life’s beating heart. If you really open your eyes, you will see Life’s monumental reflection.
The financial impact of mandated gym closures and the sustained instability from COVID19 has put the future of CrossFit Kel-Core on shaky ground. Kelvin has continued to support us, working hard to create a virtual coaching platform and personally ensuring our various needs are met. We miss his calming voice and thoughtfulness, the very things that provide a sense of normalcy to our disrupted lives.
As Kelvin wrote in his latest blog post “the essence of [his] being is a simple and pure desire to help.” This rings true for all community members Kelvin has helped—through the confines of day-to-day life, personal triumphs, heartbreaking tragedies, and everything in-between. Kelvin is the helper, but it is time for us to help him. The intention of this GoFundMe is to provide a semblance of financial relief for a human being who embodies strength, kindness, empathy, and compassion. It’s our turn to give back to our Coach who gives us so much.
