Dear Sisters,
Like most of you, we joined SOSS because I wanted to connect with and support women who inspire. From the beginning, we have felt so blessed to be a small part of this amazing group. Now, we feel even more blessed to have the opportunity to support one of our sisters in her time of need.
Asude has been a member of the Manhattan SOSS for over a year, but it was not until recently that we learned about her history. Born and raised in Turkey, she is a physician who has worked with Syrian refugees in camps, endlessly helping anyone who needs it. Along with her family, she has worked as a part of the resistance to Turkey's current dictatorship. Her father has been jailed and stripped of his professional title and benefits. Her family helped her flee to the United States with the hope that Asude would have asylum here.
Asude has applied for asylum, and we have been able to secure high quality legal representation for her. Finding her representation was not easy, as all the non-profit organizations we reached out to were over-whelmed and under-staffed. While reasonably priced, her current representation does require a fee.
Asude has not been permitted to work until this month, and her family is not able to send any funds to help her. So, we are writing to you now to ask for your support in paying her legal fees. No amount is too small - together we are positive that we can reach our goal and give her every opportunity to win her case and stay safely in the United States. Dina will withdraw the funds raised and mail then to her attorney.
Personally, we know that we would not be here if it were not for the kindness and generosity of strangers. Asude was initially reluctant to accept any support, but eventually realized that she will only be able to help others if she is safe. We know that she will pay this kindness forward and work to support all those who are lucky enough to know her.
