GP Procedure & Meds
My name is Brittany. I am 28 years old. I have a neurological disorder that causes a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, meaning all the functions of the body that are automatic: breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, temperature regulation, digestion, bladder and bowel functions — just a few of the things that make our bodies efficient places to live. My body is constantly searching for the healthy level of homeostasis most people enjoy without ever having to think about it. Along with that, I have Ehlers Danlos Sydrome, (which affects your bodies connective tissue, primarily the skin, joints, and blood vessel walls) End-Stage Bladder Disease, POTS (Post Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, which affects your heart in so many ways) and 8 other chronic illnesses. In my body, all of the aspects of the autonomic nervous system are affected.
I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis 2 years ago. It's a horribly debilitating disease. Gastroparesis is stomach paralysis. It's so much more than that. My body is not absorbing any nutrients. I have not been able to keep down 90% of what I eat, and what I do keep down isn't getting properly absorbed or emptied. It's like having the worst stomach flu you have ever had times that by 1000 and there is no cure.
I have been managing it fairly well for the past 2 years minus some flares up, and a small hospitalization. But now my body is rejecting any and everything... causing a whole bunch more problems. My pancreas is inflamed and not producing enough enzymes, my liver function levels are severely low, and its causing other motility issues.
The next steps are more invasive meds, more procedures and surgery. And of course insurance won't cover the meds because they are still in a trial phase, so they are costly, and all of these procedures & surgery is costly: copay's, time off work, recovery, etc.
MY MEDS COST $874 a month, and I can't afford that--its 18 prescriptions, 12 which I need to live my life and function, pain meds, and more.
