Grace Pearson Scholarship Hall (GP) is currently protesting against KU Housing's decision to remove gender inclusive assignments (GIA) from the hall and to strictly enforce gendered bathrooms by encouraging students and requiring undergraduate staff to report when they suspect a person uses the "wrong" bathroom. To protest this decision from KU Housing, the residents of GP have put up sticky note messages of support in their windows and have put up banners in front of the hall daily. In response, KU Housing has given out university student conduct cases to residents that put up messages in their windows or to residents that assisted in putting up any of the banners. Additionally, KU Housing has removed every banner that has been put up so far.
The decision by KU Housing disproportionally affects transgender students in GP, causing some to choose not to return to the building next year. Housing has also fired one of the undergraduate staff members working at GP for talking to the press and for assisting in protest efforts. The behavior exhibited by KU Housing is dubiously legal in regards to the First Amendment rights of GP residents and reinforces that their primary goal is to repress minorities and preemptively comply with fascist policy. KU Housing has had multiple opportunities to stand with marginalized identities and has chosen otherwise.
