Gorblee Public School Library

Hello family and Friends, Alyssa and Rebecca will be making a trip to Liberia in late June! We will be spending most of our time in Compound 3, where Rebecca did her Peace Corps Service. During the course of the trip, we will be using Alyssa’s expertise as an art teacher to host a week-long Summer Art Camp at Gorblee Elementary, Junior and Senior High School where Rebecca taught for 2 years!

Gorblee is a government school that services close to 500 students in Grand Bassa County, Liberia. The school has very limited resources (chairs, tables, chalk, etc.) and students have very little access to learning materials including books. Currently, there is no space on the campus for the use and storage of reading books and textbooks. The Ministry of Education in Liberia provides textbooks for student grades 1-12 but presently these books are being kept in boxes in a storage room which is severely limiting students’ access to these books. Reading levels at Gorblee Public School are extremely low, many students reading 5-6 levels below their grade.

Alyssa and I are hoping to raise $2,000 to create a library and teachers lounge for the students at Gorblee Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School. Creating a space for these books could give Gorblee students the opportunity to interact with books and reading in a way many of them have never been able to before. In addition, the space that is currently holding the books could be converted into a teacher lounge which has the potential to increase the overall capacity of the teachers at Gorblee. Because of the limited number of chairs and open space, teachers, during their free period, generally, leave campus. Converting this storage space into a teacher lounge would give these teachers the opportunity to lesson plan, grade papers and address student concerns during school hours.

The principal at the school, Daniel Biah, and the schools’ PTA are the driving force behind this idea.  Mr. Biah and the school/community are willing to provide the labor for the project including the painting, hanging the doors and ceiling tiles as well as cement work and window repair.  In addition, Mr. Biah and the PTA plan to hire a librarian to maintain the library.

As a culmination of the week-long Art Summer Camp students will have the opportunity to paint a mural on the outside of what will be the new Gorblee Public School Library.

If you are interested in coming alongside Alyssa and Rebecca to help build the Gorblee Public School Library, we would appreciate both your prayers and your financial support.

If you would like to pray for us on our journey we are asking for the following prayer requests:
