Good Feelings, a short film directed by Gifari Notowidigo, is an Asian-Australian slice-of-life drama following Toby, a young adult who struggles to overcome the disappearance of his father whilst being unable to muster up the courage to reconcile with his mother.
In 2026, Gifari’s previous film, Abu Cinta, earned Best Ensemble Cast at Sydney Cineverse, establishing his reputation for emotionally grounded, and culturally resonant storytelling. His work consistently draws from Asian values, reflecting themes of family, duty, restraint, and generational expectations — examining how they shape identity in adulthood, particularly within the Australian diaspora.
Good Feelings continues this exploration of identity, connection, and emotional truth. It asks an intimate question: How do we move forward when pride, guilt, and love are tangled together?
Growing up, Toby (Bill Daopeng Liu) has always felt disconnected from others around him. The story is told through the lens of a dual chronological narrative; we see how Toby struggles with his loss and loneliness in the present, as well as the complex relationship between a father and his son.
Whilst Toby is in despair, a light of hope comes into his life in the form of his coworker, Brian (Tommy Ropati). Throughout the film, we are given hints of Brian’s past, revealing his wrestle with depression, isolation and his slight suicidal tendencies after the death of his wife 3 years prior. With their connection of loss and loneliness, we are presented a story of two people who work through their struggles together.
So far, we have assembled a cast and crew, secured locations, and built a strong creative foundation. To move forward, we need financial support to bring this story to life. Donations will directly support production design, equipment hire, catering, transport costs and fair working conditions for our team.
As recent film school graduates, we are committed to producing work that meets industry standards while remaining deeply personal. Good Feelings is not just a film — it is a step towards creating a space where culturally nuanced stories are no longer the exception, but the norm.
