On Sunday, July 27th, our beloved brother Antoine Moore went to Wintler Park—a place he had visited countless times before. But that day would be different. That day, the Columbia River claimed the life of a man who lived with a heart full of love and selflessness.
That afternoon, Antoine was doing what he did best—spreading joy. He was playing football with a friend’s grandchildren, their laughter and energy filling the summer air. During the game, one of the boys accidentally threw the ball too far, and it drifted about 20 feet out into the river.
The boy’s grandmother, trying to comfort him, said, “Well, I guess you lost that ball.” The young boy’s face fell with disappointment. Antoine, moved by the child’s sadness, couldn’t just stand by.
He approached a nearby man and asked if he could borrow his raft to retrieve the ball. The man declined, saying he was about to deflate it. The grandmother reassured the boy again, “It’s okay, you just lost the ball.” But Antoine’s heart wouldn’t allow the child’s joy to be lost too.
A confident swimmer all of his life, Antoine smiled and told the boy, “It’s okay—I’ll swim and get it for you.” The boy’s eyes lit up.
Antoine reached the ball and turned to swim back. But in an instant, something went terribly wrong. People on the shore saw him struggling. The grandmother shouted, “Are you okay?” Antoine shook his head no. In a panic, she told her daughter to dial 911.
Within seconds, Antoine slipped beneath the surface and never resurfaced. Emergency responders searched late into the night and resumed their efforts the following morning. It was then that they recovered Antoine’s body.
Antoine died as he lived—selflessly and with love—giving everything he had to bring joy to others.
