My name is Maggie, and my dad is going onto his seventh year battling an aggressive form of colon cancer. In the photo is my now 10 month old son, Michael and my dad, Mike. I've decided to create a GoFundMe for my dad because his story and fight with cancer is heroic. I've had my share of friends and family battle cancer, just as many others have. With their wins and losses, people who are fighting the fight my dad is fighting need love and financial support.
When I was in my dorm room freshman year at the University of Cincinnati in 2008, I got a call from my mom explaining the scans and tests which showed my dad had colon/prostate cancer. Close to seven years later, my dad is still alive and fighting. He has had three major surgeries and 17 rounds of chemo and six weeks radiation therapy. His last surgery left him with close to 70 staples, front and back of his body. My dad is a tough guy and a fighter.
My dad used to be six feet tall, since his surgeries he has lost a few inches. He also lost his colon and some sensation in his fingertips as a side effect of the chemo and radiation. His hair has thinned, turned grey, and grown back thick and dark a few times.
His last major surgery was less than a year ago and my dad’s wounds have never really healed. Impatiently waiting to heal, doctors decided to biopsy what wasn’t healing. Tests show my dad’s cancer is back, the doctors are not sure if it ever really was 100% gone. In the next few weeks my dad is having another major surgery. Doctors will remove his prostate, tailbone, and possibly his bladder. My parents need support in this next round of chemo and his surgery. They will need to fly him to a special cancer center in New York or Texas and may need to rebuild his bladder.
