My name is Heather Heggie, and I need your help. My father, Doug Bratt, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer earlier this year. My parents, Doug and Kim, have worked hard all their lives and they are both generous to a fault. Their children, grandchildren, and much loved family members live across Canada and the United States, and they do their very best to attend weddings, reunions, graduations, and special life events. Now they find themselves in a circumstance that is physically, mentally, and financially stressful.

Doug and Kim Bratt have been married for 47 years, and together they have raised 5 kids (Bryan, Keith, Tracey, Rachel, and me). My dad comes from pioneer heritage…son of Herb and Connie Bratt, he is the 5th generation in his family to work in the logging industry on Vancouver Island. His love for the Island runs deep. He has worked hard all his life but he always loved it, and feels fortunate for his incredible career. His passions include fishing, telling fish stories, hunting, NASCAR, and spending time with his family and friends in the great outdoors.


Why I Created this Page

My parents live in Campbell River, BC, and they must travel 3 hours to Victoria in order for him to receive treatment. He receives radiation 5 times a week and chemotherapy once a week, and is scheduled to undergo surgery later this summer. My dad has been incredible throughout this difficult process, often comforting the rest of his family with his positive and determined attitude. However, the situation is growing critical and time is of the essence. They are paying out of pocket to receive assessment and treatment, as well as for medications and travel expenses. Their finances are increasingly strained, and the worry is adding to an already distressing situation. My brothers and sisters and I want to do our part in supporting them during this trial, but we know there are many friends and family members far and wide who also want to help them.
