Going Home Memorial Bike Ride

Going Home Memorial Ride

June 25, 2021 – A benefit ride to celebrate the lives of Dan Nelson and Stephen Campagnola and raise some college money for their kids.

My sister (Micki) lost her husband, Dan Nelson, on August 5, 2020 suddenly to a pulmonary embolism at the age of 49.  They were married for 24 years, 10 months and 20 days.  They raised 3 wonderful children together:  Colton, Taylor and Grace whom he adored more than anything.  Dan was filled with so much life and laughter, always trying to crack a joke even when he was the only one laughing.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends; he was a true lumberjack with a successful logging business who truly loved the outdoors.

Emily’s sister (Lori) lost her husband, Stephen Campagnola, on January 25, 2021 to a hard fought battle with Melanoma that was diagnosed as a brain tumor in April of 2020.  Lori and Stephen were married for 24 years, 11 months and 9 days.  They have 2 thoughtful and hardworking kids in Tony and Nicole.  Steve enjoyed cooking, baseball, martinis, fixing anything from kitchen appliances to bikes, and working as an HVAC engineer.  He taught his family to try hard no matter what and try to laugh a little too.

There are a lot of wonderful similarities between our sisters in that they are both extremely loving, generous and caring individuals.  Unfortunately, they will now share the similarity of being widowed having both lost their husbands just weeks before their 25th wedding anniversaries.  Both families have college age children where financial help would be appreciated and would definitely lighten their burdens.

In an effort to raise money to help my nieces and nephews with their college expenses, I am planning a bike ride home from the Canadian border starting at Grand Portage, MN.  This will be a 316 mile bike ride with the purpose of “Going Home” as did Dan and Steve when they were called home to Heaven.  I am hoping to complete the ride in 25 hours to honor their lives and their 25 years of marriage with our sisters.  The ride will take place on June 25th.  I have a $25,000 goal for fund raising but would like to raise as much money as possible as they still have 11 years of college yet to pay for between their children.  The funds raised will be used exclusively for their college tuition.

Any financial help will be very much appreciated by both families but just as important we welcome your prayers.  Prayers for these two families.  Prayers for our sisters.  Prayers for our nieces and nephews.  And selfishly, please pray for my safety on the roads, no rain, and any wind from the North (a south wind will easily add 4 hours to this adventure).  I also hope this ride touches others to reach out to those who have suffered true loss recently.  I know our sisters will feel touched and blessed to know that we as a community still care and support them as they live with the daily void of not having these wonderful men in their lives.
