Women facing mastectomy are often offered breast implants as the first or only option to reconstruct their chest wall. "Doing nothing" is another option; removing one or both breasts and sewing the remaining skin together without any care for appearance. However there are survivors, previvors, and explants who would rather forego breast reconstruction surgery for Aesthetic Flat Closure instead. AFC is an increasingly popular, healthy, body-positive, freeing option that has given rise to a worldwide community of flatties who support, educate, and celebrate women who have embraced life without breasts!
Unfortunately there isn't always a medically clear path to AFC. Women are uninformed, misinformed, and even denied their expressed wishes by the surgeons trusted with their care. This topic cannot be broached without addressing the patriarchial foundation of breast reconstruction and the hostile body identity machine directed at women throughout their lives.
This documentary is in its early stages, but thanks to your donations we were able to attend the most significant national gathering of flatties of all time on Grand Mesa in Corado, the largest flat-top mountain in the world! What an experience! And what a joyous weekend of kinship and healing. (And silliness and bra crowns and disco!)
We continue to need to raise money for my tiny film crew to interview individuals, flattie events, and AFC activists at the center of this movement. This footage is fundamental. Every donation increases our sources crucial to broadening the film's scope.
