My name is Monique Moreau. I’m a Cree/Saulteaux, autistic stand-up comedian who is going blind from Stargardt’s disease, a rare genetic form of macular degeneration.
Earlier this year, I lost my job as a piano teacher because I could no longer read sheet music. It broke my heart. I had built a career helping students find their voices in music, but when my own vision loss made reading print impossible, I couldn’t keep teaching others to do what I could no longer do myself.
Since then, I’ve been unemployed and devoting myself full-time to learning accessible technology and braille. My goal is to regain the ability to read print and sheet music so that I can continue to create, teach, and perform.
This fundraiser supports me in this period of transition. Your help gives me the breathing room to learn new skills, adapt to blindness, and build a sustainable future as both a comedian and educator.
I may be losing my sight, but I am determined not to lose my independence, my creativity, or my voice.
Earlier in this fundraiser, I raised $5,000 for a divorce lawyer retainer (huge thanks! You saved me from representing myself in court with nothing but vibes and a white cane).
Now I’m asking for help beyond the legal stuff. Going blind isn’t cheap: screen readers, braille displays, mobility training, and just keeping the lights on while I retrain. Your support helps me not only survive this weird chapter, but keep creating comedy and music instead of just adding “professional litigant” to my résumé.
Please continue to share my story, it has been so helpful!
Thanks again to anyone who is following my story and to all those who donated!
