In December 2020, Kim was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma HER2 positive, an aggressive form of breast cancer that has spread to her lymph nodes. She has a long hard road ahead of her, but the HER2 positive prognosis is good because it ultimately provides more options to fight this cancer, and the doctors are already pleased with her body's responses to her first treatment.
The treatment plan, through Minnesota Oncology, is to attack this very aggressively upfront through chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. On December 31st, she had her first of 5 rounds of chemotherapy and the second on January 21st. Kim will receive these treatment rounds every three weeks and they take about 4 hours to complete each time. Due to COVID and Kim's vulnerable condition, she is quarantining between her home in Hopkins and her sister Alison's home during the chemo treatment days. With Ella at her side, some family nearby, and friends to meet up virtually, Kim is already kicking this cancer's butt.
These treatments are not super fun though. They impact Kim's sleep patterns, her appetite, and make everything taste like metalic yuck, but they have not broken Kim's spirit, her bravery, or her sense of humor. She says, "This is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I am up for the fight. Seeing my mom and daughter go through their own cancer journeys has prepared me for this."
Kim says she's already met so many amazing people battling different cancers, even somebody from good old Willmar. And she'll needs encouragement, love, and support from all of her friends and family. We'll be keeping her page updated as she goes through this journey, so check back after her next treatment on February 21st. As you can imagine the physical and emotional cost of cancer is tremendous, but so are the financial burdens of treatment. Please drop a kind word to help Kim through these tough times and/or donate some funds to help unburden the bumpy road ahead.
