Little did I know on my Weds June 8th flight from Berkeley CA to visit ailing friends in Madison & here in Milwaukee WI…..that on Monday June 13 I would suffer a right hip-subcapital femoral neck fracture. Have spent 10 days in a local hospital, now in a Milwaukee rehab facility.
Those of you who know me, know that I am fiercely independent, love the color PURPLE & take pride in dealing with my well being. I also love being with my dear friends & family. It is very hard for me to ask for your help…
SO WHOA, what a physically-emotionally-spiritually challenging journey this has been as I reflect on this July 4th, day of our country’s Independence Day! I am red, white, & blue with my current circumstances.
I face a flood of unprecedented & unexpected expenses:
· My University of CA United Healthcare Medicare Choice insurance has denied my request for authorization to stay in this facility, Eastcastle Place….so I am paying almost $7000 out of my own pocket for 4 weeks of care which will expire on Thursday July 21st. I don’t yet know whether I will need to stay longer. I am appealing that denial.
· A San Francisco friend has offered to fly here & accompany me back to Berkeley, so cost of airfare for the two of us yet to be determined
· I am uncertain as to what accommodations I will need when I get home, one possibility may be continuing care in a long term care facility with skilled nursing for a few months.
· The need to pay for July & possibly August rent for my current Berkeley apartment as I deal with my situation.
Thank you for reading this and I hope to communicate my progress as I traverse these coming weeks.
