My program at University of Michigan during the 2020-2021 school year will cost $51,200.  I don't qualify for in-state tuition, however the university awarded me a scholarship worth $25,000 per year.  I qualified for a student loan of $20,000 per year, which is already more than I can afford... but that's another story...   Right now, I need to raise the remaining $6,200 to cover my first year of tuition and fees to be able to enroll.

Have I looked for other ways of support?  Yes many!  In fact, I traveled to Mexico at the peak of the pandemic seeking help from the Mexican government and believe me, I haven't been successful.  This is why I am organizing this fundraising campaign. 

Now, you may wonder why I'm pursuing a degree that I cannot afford.  
Well... here is my story:

My name is Francisco Fernandez and I am a Mexican pianist and orchestral conductor. I am extremely honored and excited to share with you that this fall I will begin a Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Michigan to study with professor Kenneth Kiesler.  The University of Michigan is one of the top institutions of higher learning in the world, with one of the most competitive and renowned schools of music and orchestral conducting programs.  

My passion for conducting began at a young age but it wasn't until just a few years ago that I had the opportunity to dive into this field. Being a pianist, I combined my skills by conducting from the piano. 
My career as a conductor started in 2015 while I was a music director at Central Congregational Church in Chelmsford, MA.  We presented masterworks for orchestra and choir and by its second year, these concerts were standing room only.   Quickly, I realized how strongly music and the orchestra bind our human relationships together. To be able to receive so much energy from the musicians and to feel them react to my own was something that I fell in love with. 

Last year, I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and became music director at the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh.   For our Christmas concert I conducted a program that included an orchestra and singers from the St. Andrews Choir, the community, and musicians and soloists from the University of Michigan. Certainly this was an unforgettable concert.

During this time I invested myself in preparing for the audition.  Many orchestral conductors from all over the world applied and went through a very rigorous 2-day selection process.  Only 2 of us were admitted into the master's program.

I would like to acknowledge that God has been with me every step of the way.   He has brought me this far and I know that He will open doors for me. I am grateful for the people who helped me get here and for people like you who will help me take this next step in my conducting career.   $6,200 is a lot of money for a single person, but with your generosity I believe this is possible. 

My dreams are big, and those who know me can attest to that.   This is only the beginning because I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

¿He buscado otras formas de apoyo? ¡Sí muchas! De hecho, viajé a México en el pico de la pandemia en busca de ayuda del gobierno mexicano y créanme, no he tenido éxito. Por eso es que estoy organizando esta campaña de recaudación de fondos.

Ahora, puede que se pregunten por qué estoy estudiando una carrera que no puedo pagar.   Bueno ... está es mi historia:

Mi pasión por la dirección orquestal comenzó a una edad temprana, pero no fue hasta hace unos años que tuve la oportunidad de sumergirme en este campo. Siendo pianista, combiné mis habilidades dirigiendo desde el piano.
Mi carrera como director comenzó en el 2015 cuando era director musical en la Iglesia Central Congregational de Chelmsford, MA.  Ahí presentamos obras maestras para orquesta y coro y, en su segundo año, estos conciertos estaban tan concurridos que solamente había espacio para gente de pié.  Rápidamente, me di cuenta de cuán fuertemente la música y la orquesta unen nuestras relaciones humanas. Poder recibir tanta energía de los músicos y sentirlos reaccionar ante la mía fue algo de lo que me enamoré.

El año pasado, me mudé a Ann Arbor, Michigan y me convertí en director musical de la Primera Iglesia Presbiteriana de Tecumseh. Para nuestro concierto de Navidad dirigí un programa que incluyó una orquesta y cantantes del Coro de St. Andrews, la comunidad y músicos y solistas de la Universidad de Michigan. Realmente fue un concierto inolvidable.

Durante este tiempo me dediqué a prepararme para la audición. Muchos directores de orquesta de todo el mundo se postularon y pasaron por un proceso de selección muy riguroso de 2 días.  Unicamente 2 de nosotros fuimos admitidos en el programa de maestría.

Me gustaría reconocer que Dios ha estado conmigo en cada paso del camino. Me ha traído hasta aquí y sé que me abrirá las puertas. Estoy agradecido por las personas que me ayudaron a llegar aquí y por personas como usted que me ayudarán a dar el siguiente paso en mi carrera como director. US$6,200 es mucho dinero para una sola persona, pero con su generosidad ¡creo que esto es posible!.

Mis sueños son grandes y los que me conocen pueden dar fe de ello. Este es solo el comienzo porque sé que todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece.
