Family, Friends and Other, Caring Souls:
My Name is Sheldon A. Butts, and I have spent much of my life giving freely from the heart to those in NEED, with NO expectations, other than feeling the joy of being a blessing. I want to share a story with you, in the hopes that you can join me in helping a VERY SPECIAL lifelong FRIEND of mine.
I choose not to use the word “FRIEND” loosely, as I believe that word should be exclusive and saved for that individual within your life that you share SPECIAL mutual affection with. Well, I have known my LIFE-LONG FRIEND Mary Kay McConnell-Convery for the last 40 years. She has ALWAYS been the same QUIET, HONEST, GENUINE, SWEET, LOVING, CARING FRIEND (the whole family shares like qualities). I left Georgetown for approximately 25 years but, Mary Kay and I always stayed in contact with each other, even if it was only once a year.
Mary Kay got married to the LOVE of her life, Martin “Marty” Convery in 2010. There union included Mary Kay’s son Dalton, who was 9 at the time and now 21 with a wife of his own. Marty took care of Mary Kay and Dalton and Loved the two of them, as God Loved the Church. They had plenty of great days and good times. However, life as they knew it would take a sharp, sudden, downward spiraling turn in 2017.
Mary Kay received a call at work and was told to, “COME HOME NOW!!” When she arrived home, Marty was on the floor, unconscious, and unresponsive. Paramedics worked tirelessly to obtain a pulse. After many minutes had passed (which seemed like a lifetime) Marty was stable enough to be airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Marty’s MIRACLE began to take form, because it was thought that he would NOT make the transport from Georgetown to Charleston.
We would come to know that Marty had a VERY SERIOUS Stroke on the right side of his brain, attributed to an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) which is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary system, usually in the Brain. Upon arrival to MUSC, Marty went directly to the Brain Trauma Operating Room. After surgery, Marty was placed in a medical induced coma for the next 45 days, had several other surgeries and placed on ventilator, feeding tube, had a tracheotomy, along with a Jackson-Pratt drain. The rupture also rendered him paralyzed on the left side of his body. Just when you think things could not get any worst, the MUSC Neurosurgeons found another AVM during one of Marty’s follow-up appointments. This time it was on the left side of the brain.
This AVM would be treated with aggressive ration treatment as Marty would NOT survive another brain surgery. Even with the aggressive treatment Medical Doctors (MD) told Mary Kay that it would take the AVM at least 2 years to shrink to a livable size. Shortly after treatment began, Marty began to have bad seizures and was airlifted again to MUSC. Now, there was yet another concern. Marty had a major, large intestine bleed. As fast as blood was put it, it would bleed out. The bleed was finally cauterized, and Marty went home, after yet another long stay in the hospital.
Once at home Marty needed 24hr. care. Initially, that need was being met by a combination of Mary Kay and a Registered Nurse (RN). However, the cost associated with the RN home health care (along with other medical needs) became too much for the family to bear alone, financially. This led Mary Kay to make a VERY hard decision. She decided to leave her job and personally take care of her husband. She was a fish out of water. Because, she had no medical (but had to learn quickly) background and she was accustomed to working full time, since the age of 15. Mary Kay would soon have a NEW 24-Hour Job: taking care of her bedridden husband, Marty. This new chapter came with a cost. Their medical bills began to pile up, they began to fall behind with the mortgage, car payments and all associated insurance. It even became hard to put and keep food in the house.
Marty had been in and out of the hospital, almost ALL of 2019 due to endocarditis (infection around the heart), cirrhosis of the liver and complications with his non-reversible colostomy. He continues to have NEEDED medical appointments and will, until he is called home by our Father in Heaven.
My FRIEND Mary Kay is in DIRE NEED of financial assistance, NOW! Her will and strength really touches the core of my heart. She touched my soul about 2 weeks ago by sending me a letter saying, “I thank God for you being a lifelong friend and for listening to me. You know that I am a quiet person, and don’t let a lot of people enter my circle, but I needed to talk to someone to stay sane. You know that I have been hurting, suffering, and is a depressive state of mind. I must tell you that there are times that I have cried and asked God what else can I do to please Him, so my husband can be well.” [But it did not take her long to remember that there is PURPOSE in God’s plan and that they are still blessed for Marty to be among the living.]
If I had the means, I would give Mary Kay ALL the help she needs. However, I am not in such a position. Together we can give her HOPE, while giving her the financial relief that she NEEDS. I want and NEED my friend to finally have one less thing to worry about. So, she can place 100% emphasis on giving her husband Marty the 24hr. care that he NEEDS to make it, one day at a time. This campaign is strictly for the NEEDS associated with the medical trauma that this family has endured and sustained over the last 3+ years and will address some financial burdens due to the same. Thus, give as much as you can, as often as you can. I PROMISE you that this campaign of NEED will be VERY TRANSPARENT with your financial gifts. Mary Kay has and believes in her FAITH, she is just having an issue with HOPE because, the lack of finances needed to keep Marty's Miracle alive! Please, find it in your hearts to help Mary Kay and Marty during these dark, trying, emotional, painful, uncertain times! #MartyMiracleHope
