Cap’s beating Cancer

My name is Joe Capitani, and I am a 36-year-old physical education teacher. In Dec of 2018, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer that has changed life for me, my wife Cheryl, and my beautiful children Cole and Payton.

Synovial Sarcoma is an extremely rare cancer that grows in the body’s soft tissues. The primary tumor was found in my right shoulder, entangled in the bundle of nerves operating my right arm and hand. After four surgeries, months of chemotherapy and radiation, I was left with a barely functional right arm, my wrist and hand no longer function.

Before Christmas, I was informed there were more tumors in my shoulder and had also spread to my right lung and spine. The tumor on my spine had fractured the vertebrae and was pressing on my spinal cord, causing unbearable pain and the threat of paralysis. My family and I are faced with fundamental uncertainty about our future.

A new treatment was started and shows a decrease in the tumors size. The hope is that the medicine continues to work, and I can fend off the side effects for as long as possible. This new hope has inspired me to start living again.

The money raised from this GoFundMe will help my family in many ways. First, it will help alleviate all the unforeseen expenses accumulated over the last 3.5 yrs. Because of the rarity of SS I need to travel to Boston for most of my care at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. These trips require multiple overnight stays and all the other related costs and are pretty costly.

My physical limitations make housekeeping and home maintenance challenging, if not impossible. My wife works full-time as a teacher and does all the duties while being an amazing mom. Donations would allow us to purchase modified tools and equipment to accommodate my limitations. Mowing the lawn with one arm is pretty dangerous.

I’ve also been given a chance to attend a camp in Hawaii this May for young adults battling cancer. Camp Koru invited me to join them to learn from others that have experienced similar issues and aid in navigating the hurdles my diagnosis brings. Money raised will also help to cover travel costs.
