There are unforgettable days that change our lives forever. Sometimes, those days bring us incredible joy. Sometimes, those days bring us unimaginable pain. For husband and father, Delvalo Baitey, and his wife, Chevron, that unforgettable day was March 26, 2022. It was an earth-shattering day that changed their lives and their family forever.
Around 2:00 p.m., on March 26, 2022, a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon, Delvalo and Chevron Baitey were in their vehicle, in a procession of traffic on Boring Road, poised to turn onto Flat Shoals Parkway in DeKalb County. Suddenly and without warning, a dead and decayed tree from nearby property fell onto the rooftop of their vehicle, crushing it virtually beyond recognition. That falling tree did more than crush the Baiteys’ vehicle; it crushed Delvalo Baitey’s spine, leaving him in a motionless world where he is now paralyzed from the shoulders down. Delvalo Baitey, age 47, was a strong, confident, and independent man who worked for many years for DeKalb County. He supported his family by working as a sanitation truck driver and as a truck driver in metro Atlanta’s growing film industry. Now, he has been reduced to being taken care of for the rest of his life. His loving wife, Chevron Baitey, will be his caregiver for the rest of her life, having to attend to her husband’s most basic and intimate bodily needs. The life they had known as husband and wife prior to March 26, 2022, is gone forever, replaced by an existence they never imagined.
To adjust to this new life, the family is raising money to move into a handicapped-accessible home and to purchase a customized van they can use to transport Mr. Baitey to his numerous doctor’s visits and physical therapy appointments. Sadly, the family has exhausted its savings over the past year in an effort to adjust to this “new normal.” Please help this family with the resources needed to re-establish themselves and survive this catastrophic event.
