Joya's MA Go Fund Me Page
Hi My Name is Joya I currently work as a Therapeutic Program Facilitator for the NHS in specialist drug and alcohol services.
I am passionate about using art psychotherapy as a means for clients to gain a better understanding of themselves and the nature of their difficulties or distress.
I am entering the final year of my 3-year MA (at the University of South Wales) to become a fully qualified Art Psychotherapist. I have set up this ‘Go Fund Me’ pledge campaign to help me complete my final year.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia in 2019 at the end of the second year of my MA. My diagnosis revealed I have trouble carrying out research, summarising large amounts of information, organising, categorising, referencing my research, proofreading, assignment planning, note-taking, report writing and time keeping around academic work.
My tutors have all expressed concerns about me completing my dissertation while working full time. So, I am looking for funding that may be able to assist me as I complete my dissertation and final year.
Completing my final year and gaining an MA will enable me to practice as an art psychotherapist and become a practitioner registered with the BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) and BAATN. (Black, African and Asian Therapy Networks).
During these unprecedented times of COVID-19, lockdown has given many of us time for deep reflection and in the light of the Black Lives Matter movement, I felt my training so far had ill-equipped me to work with multi-ethnic clients, and crystallised the areas in which I feel I need more awareness and training in respect of race and culture. The BLM movement is giving me a voice and helping me speak up about the lack of BAME practitioners in the therapeutic field. I believe BAME therapists and art therapy has a unique offering to make in helping P.O.C begin to safely find a way through their complex issues of trauma, through the process of learning to trust again, find their voice and a narrative.
As someone who was In and out of foster care for the first five years of my life, and as someone who has been involved in drug and alcohol services since 2005, first as a service user, then as a volunteer and now as a professional, I believe my own personal and professional experiences place me in a position to make a real difference.
Your pledge support will help give me the time I need to complete my final year, help with the continuation of my research and contributions in the field of BAME mental health through my placement; work experiences, then working as a BAME art therapist.
May I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for anything you are able to do to contribute towards helping me meet this goal.
