My mother was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in June 2019. She began treatment shortly thereafter. After months of chemotherapy, she was able to have a total hysterectomy in December of 2019. There were some cancerous areas in her abdominal cavity that were unable to be removed. She has been on chemotherapy off and on ever since.
Cancer impacted her long before her own diagnosis. Her husband of almost 20 years, Craig, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2013. He bravely fought for years, passing in November 2015. A few years before his diagnosis, they fostered then subsequently adopted two of their grandchildren. They provided a stable, safe and nurturing environment for the kids. When he was diagnosed, it was very hard on everyone, but especially the kids. It was devastating after all they had been through, to now have a stable life be uncertain again.
Despite his illness, he and my mom adopted them. I went to the courthouse that day. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. As the judge announced the adoption as being official, Craig, embracing my niece and nephew, said “Now we are a family” and the judge replied, “You already were!” I was balling my eyes out; it was so beautiful!! The picture on this page is of that day outside the courthouse. (Craig had lost over 70 pounds from illness and treatment.) Unfortunately, I could not get the full picture uploaded without cropping people's heads...
Right up until the night he passed away, he was parenting the kids and concerned about my niece finishing her homework. He was just that kind of man. One of my mom’s memories of him during his illness is that regardless of his inability to eat, she would come home from work and he would be cooking dinner for his family!
Fast forward to now! Despite my mother’s condition, she still works. She still drives my nephew to school every day and cares for the kids, cooks homemade meals, tries to keep up the house and cares for her two senior dogs. She is doing the work of a mom in her twenties, although she will be 70 on her next birthday.
Due to the stability provided by my stepdad and mom, my niece was able to excel in high school (Class of 2020) while also completing her A.A. She now works full time in healthcare and is very responsible! My nephew is in his freshman year of high school and working very hard! He was accepted into the collegiate program at the local college! He gave a wonderful speech at his 8th Grade graduation ceremony that inspired many! They all have overcome so much!!!
Now that so much time has passed since Craig’s passing and because of her own health condition, my mom hasn’t been able to keep up with her house and the needed repairs. She needs a new septic tank, her kitchen is falling apart, the bathroom also needs extensive repairs, her windows are all very old and some are broken, and she needs a new A.C. All of that will cost upwards of 20,000 to 25,000!
Her medical bills and co-pays have been excessive! Her current medical out of pocket for the remainder of this year and beginning of next year co-pays are 5,000.
She has given so much to her family and grandkids! Despite all her trials, she remains so positive! Her heart’s desire is to continually walk closer with the Lord everyday! I wish to raise money to help her with her treatments and home repairs.
