Team Evan was created by a special group of Evan's "Marine Bros" who want to help make one of Evan's wishes come true. Evan has expressed a strong desire to visit Washington DC to experience the history and culture of our nation. Evan has a strong respect for the Marines ( and all people protecting our country ) and to visit Washington DC with these friends would make this experience even more special. Three members of Team Evan will be running in the Marine Corps Marathon in Evan's honor. Please consider helping us make this trip an unforgettable memory for Evan and his family.
EVAN'S STORY
Evan is a loving 10 year old boy who has been diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease ( complex IV ) and Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction. These diseases are both rare and life threatening as well as degenerative. There are no cures. Evan was born full term, but immediately suffered from reflux and feeding issues. He spent most days/nights crying for hours on end. As an infant Evan underwent many different studies, testing, and procedures trying to get answers for his struggles. At 18 months of age, Evan's parents had him evaluated and found out that he was on the autism spectrum ( in addition to his medical issues ). This diagnosis, along with his many medical issues made his care nonstop and labor intensive. Evan and his family worked hard together to move forward. Trying to get a medical diagnosis for Evan was a very long and frustrating time period. It took work-ups in 5 different children's hospitals in 3 different states to finally get help...It was almost too late...Evan was very close to dying by the time he got to the 5th hospital. Evan now has a permanent surgically placed central line, a G-tube and an ileostomy bag. He cannot eat any food and is hooked up to an IV 16 hours a day. He receives many medicines multiple times a day through his G-tube ( stomach tube ) and his central line ( IV catheter ). Evan has endured many invasive tests, procedures, surgeries and hospitalizations. Through it all, he has never given up and has chosen to live even when others thought he would not. Although Evan does not have a good prognosis, he lives life to the fullest and wants to experience all he can in his lifetime.
