As many of you know my sister Ronda and brother in law Sam are expecting their 5th child in December. She is due Christmas day. About two months ago they were given the diagnosis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). We've learned many things we didn't know about CDH and the more information we gained, the more questions and uncertainties we've experienced. Babies with CDH have an unclosed diaphragm allowing the abdominal organs to migrate into the chest cavity which hinders proper lung development. Survival rates depend on the severity of the herniation and development of the lungs but averages around 50% . From the beginning, we've heard that the most important thing is where she delivers. The hospital must have at least a level III NICU and ECMO (lung bypass) capabilities. My sister and brother in law considered many options and had a few less than optimal experiences with local doctors and hospitals. Recently, God has been opening new doors for them and they have decided to deliver in Florida at John Hopkins All Children's Hospital under the care of Dr. Kays who has a 90% success rate with CDH! We know that many, many people are praying and we can't thank you all enough. Our God is sovereign and in control of all uncertainties.
