UPDATE: Dec. 6, 2018 ...
Thank you all for your incredible generosity and support! We are so thrilled to update you and share that, after two weeks at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, MN, Malin will be GOING HOME this Friday, Dec. 7!
Malin was transferred to Gillette the day after Thanksgiving, and she has been blowing the doctors away with her strength and progress ever since. Malin will continue outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy upon her return home, to continue working on strength and balance, with the goal of walking independently again at all times. She will also be getting back to school soon ... and most important, spending time with her family.
Additionally, some tests that were pending have confirmed Malin's disease as AFM. Her case was sent to the CDC and will be used for research to help further awareness and treatment; and hopefully, vaccines for this rare disease will some day be developed.
Thank you all for your continued thoughts, prayers and support for this sweet girl and her family during a very difficult time. They have all meant more than you can imagine!
BACKGROUND ...
Anyone who knows Malin knows she is one of the sweetest, most caring, fun-loving eight-year-olds around. And, now, she’s facing a unique battle no child should ever have to encounter. After fighting a typical virus for about a week, Malin suddenly started to lose her ability to walk, as well as strength in many of her muscles.
An ambulance brought her to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where specialists have been treating her since Nov. 6. Through many tests, procedures and treatments, doctors believe she may have either Accute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), better known as the “polio-like virus” that’s been recognized in the news recently; or, Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Either diagnosis is very difficult to confirm, and it’s possible doctors may never be able to provide 100 percent certainty as to the illness that caused Malin to lose much of her muscle function and strength.
While it has been already been a tough road for this sweet second-grader, Malin is a fighter. She is a tough little girl who isn’t giving up and is working to recover as much, and as quickly, as possible. Through intense physical, occupational and speech therapy, there is hope Malin will make a full recovery, with the ability to walk and fully use her muscles once again.
With two other children at home, balancing and caring for the whole family, while staying focused on Malin’s care and recovery, isn’t easy. The many gifts, meals, cards and prayers already offered by so many have provided much comfort and help for the family. However, so many have expressed an interest in doing more to help. Therefore, we would like to offer the opportunity for friends and family to support this family and help ease the financial burden a situation like this can create. Most important, though, the family welcomes continued prayers, positive thoughts and support for Malin during her fight to recover.
