$5 = sports bra = Guatemalan girls who can run and play!
Adolescent girls in Guatemala want to run, play and do sports, just like girls in the U.S. But without a sports bra, the going can be rough! Girls hitting puberty sideline themselves from play and sports because they’re embarrassed by their breasts and/or just don’t feel comfortable without breast support. You can keep them going! With a $5 donation, I will purchase a new sports bra for a Guatemalan girl who would otherwise go without. It will be distributed at a Days for Girls assembly in Jalapa, Guatemala, in July of 2019.
You and I know the value--and joy--of being active. Let's give that opportunity to developing girls in an under-served area of Guatemala.
Details: About 12 Alaska folks (not including me) will travel to Guatemala in July of 2019 to provide medical care through Salud y Paz (www.saludypaz.org). In addition, the team will host a mother/daughter tea, at which the sports bras and Days for Girls menstruation kits will be explained and distributed without charge (www.daysforgirls.org). Through local health leaders, the goal is to demystify puberty and empower girls to live full, active lives. (Many girls stop attending school during their periods because they lack hygiene supplies.)
The goal is for 300 Days for Girls kits to be distributed. I hope to provide a sports bra with each kit. (300 x $5 = $1500) I've been able to locate basic sports bras in a variety of sizes for an average price of $5. If you have a source for donated or low-cost new sports bras, please let me know.
Please consider donating $5.50 per bra to cover this funding platform's fees.
