The Emotional Story
Just a few weeks ago, in early June, I noticed Elroy’s stomach was swollen. We quickly got him to our veterinarians at Coast Veterinary Services in Scotts Valley where they identified a large mass in his abdomen. We took the next steps to see what the options were. Elroy's discomfort was increasing by the day.
We wasted no time and took him to Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital where they were able to detect a splenic tumor. He needed a splenectomy, as soon as possible. That same day, he went into surgery and during the procedure they realized that the tumor was encompassing other vital organs (his pancreas and stomach).
They described the situation as “grave”, it sounded unlikely that he was going to make it.
I anxiously awaited the call. When I got it, I was AMAZED to hear that he had made it through surgery. I was beyond grateful.
His pancreas was inflamed but his stomach looked good. He remained in the ICU overnight.
I reached out to friends, family, and coworkers, anyone who knew Elroy, and how special he is. I asked for prayer and positive thoughts that he would make it through this. Everyone (YOU!) reassured me that he was “tough, resilient” and was going to make it. I braced myself for the worst while I hoped and prayed for the best.
When I got the news from his surgeon that he was stable and comfortable and that I could come pick him up, I jumped at the earliest time for his discharge from the hospital so I could bring him home.
He came home with a relaxed and slightly confused look on his face.
He is now settled back at home and has almost become accustomed to his blue “cone of shame” that he is required to wear until his sutures are removed. Don’t worry, I take it off during supervised times of snuggles & relaxation.
Elroy still has some hurdles to overcome. His tumor was in fact malignant and with how aggressive it had been growing in his abdomen the surgeon recommended we plan to treat him to get rid of the cancer.
We are currently waiting for the results of the last test to see which of two types of cancer he has.
Once we know, we will be able to continue his treatment so that he can live out his life happy and pain-free like he was meant to.
