My name is Jessica and I'm setting this up on behalf of my best friend of 30+ years who has found herself in a terrifying situation that no mom should have to go through. On Thursday her 18 year old son Layne thought he was having a crippling panic attack and was having a hard time breathing so he decided to go to the emergency room. When he got there the hospital called his mom and told her that what was going on was much more serious and he would be requiring emergency surgery. He was in fact suffering from a health condition called spontaneous pneumothorax, where a collection of air in the chest can cause the lung to collapse. They took him back and placed a tube through his side into the lung to get air back into it and kept him overnight. The next morning (Friday) he was doing much better and they took him back into surgery to remove the tube. He was stable and seemed like he was improving but a few short hours later instead of discharging him they were once again putting another tube into his chest due to the lung collapsing again. This morning (Saturday) they again did x-rays and found out that the tube they placed into his chest which is connected to a machine that pushes air into the lungs is in fact not working. The air in his lung is escaping faster then it's inflating. Iron mountain hospital DCH does not have a pulmonologist or really any experience dealing with this type of situation so he is going to need to be transferred in order to have his third surgery to repair the hole in his lung and continue with next steps to get the situation under control. It's been very frustrating and terrifying for both parents as they watch their son struggle to breathe, throw up from the medications, deal with excruciating pain and not be able to eat or drink anything. At this point they are playing the waiting game to see when and where he is going to be transferred to get the help he needs. Brooke has not left his bedside and will not leave him until he is 100% better. Because of the fact that she is staying with him she is going to be dealing with expenses that she was not prepared to deal with. She is not able to go to work at the moment and the lost wages are overwhelming at this time after holidays and other bills. Not to mention that as soon as he's transferred she will also have travel expenses and possibly lodging expenses if she isn't able to stay in the hospital with him due to him being "an adult" and possible COVID restrictions. And I'm the future I'm sure they will begin to get slammed with the medical bills that will accompany this whole ordeal. There are so many praying for Layne and we are all so very grateful and ask that prayers continue. Brooke would NEVER ask for help financially as she is a very hard worker that will do whatever she needs to do in life to earn whatever money she needs to in order for her family to be taken care of. She is the type of person that would forever go without something for herself in order to help others in need. I am taking this on myself to ask for help on her behalf so she can focus on the needs of her son and getting him the help he needs instead of worrying about the financial strain this is causing already only 3 days into this scary ordeal. Every dollar helps and will relieve the stress she is facing. If you are not able to donate please send positive vibes, love, and prayers their way as they need those too. Thank you all so much in advance.
