Remembering Al Landess

Anyone who ever met Al Hammerbrain (Allen Godsey Landess) – a veteran of the NYC punk/hardcore scene – knew how loving, accepting and extremely compassionate he was. Al touched the hearts of everyone he met, as evidenced by the torrent of stories being shared on his Facebook page. He was a friend to all from all walks of life.

Al would give absolutely anyone his last dollar, his last cigarette, his shoulder to cry on, or stop what he was doing to choose the perfect jukebox song (or sing it to you himself!). He was endlessly generous and loved all over the East Village and beyond, his home for over 35 years.

Al was the frontman, guitarist and songwriter of Hammerbrain, later called Damn Kids. They played with notable bands such as Blondie, GG Allin, D.O.A., Richie Stotts, Nashville Pussy and Cheetah Chrome.

When Al passed away this week after months of battling cancer, his beloved longtime partner, Joanie Koveleskie was by his side, and now she needs our help. All donations will go directly to Joanie to cover funeral expenses, medical and household bills, and to provide her some relief and room to grieve during this devastating time.

The East Village will never be the same without Al's presence. He will be missed as much as he was loved.
