Dear Family and Friends,
Michele is an amazing mother, aunt, sister and daughter who goes above and beyond to care for others. She never fails to put a smile on everyone's face and be the life of the party. She has been a giver and helper whenever she can. She is a best friend and hero to many and we admire her empathy, dedication and hard work ethic. So, this news was a tremendous shock..
On July 27th Michele went in for her yearly mammogram and was told they found something suspicious. After many tests and biopsies, she was diagnosed with triple positive invasive ductal carcinoma. This means that she was estrogen- positive, progesterone- positive and HER2- positive which is a very aggressive cancer that spreads quicker. Her breast surgeon recommended a lumpectomy with testing of the lymph nodes. During surgery on August 17th, they found one positive node. This was believed to be triple positive stage II breast cancer.
Michele met with the oncologist to start a treatment plan. On September 25th, she will start six cycles every three weeks of chemotherapy (TCHP) followed by Perjeta every three weeks for one year. Radiation will be added daily for thirty days halfway through that treatment. After that, there will be maintenance medication for about ten years.
Being a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, our philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness so this topic is a passion of mine. I know the importance of early detection and spreading awareness due to the fact that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with this disease. I understand the financial hardship this will be for my mom. My sister, Alex, is a social worker and knows the emotional hardship this will also cause. Michele is currently working two jobs as an administration assistant in special education for a co-op and a Real Estate Broker. Her employer has generously allowed her to work from home and she would love to continue to work through this treatment plan to the best of her abilities. The financial hardship has taken its toll with supplies, prescriptions, transportation, co-pays, out of pocket costs and time off work.
Please consider a monetary donation to help with the costs associated with breast cancer. Michele thanks everyone who have been kind during this process. She has received numerous cards, flowers, gifts, phone calls, texts and emails which she is very appreciative of. Please keep our family and Michele in your prayers as we continue to fight this horrible disease with her.
UPDATE (9/28):
Michele would like to thank all of you for your generosity, well wishes and positive thoughts. Unfortunately, she's unable to return all the phone calls, emails and texts. Friday my grandma took her to complete her first TCHP chemo treatment with only a few side effects, and of course the fire alarms had to go off! She didn't need to evacuate. Saturday's Nulesta shot did not come in, so she will work with her doctor on this matter for WBC. Michele's resting comfortably at home and thanks you all again! First cycle is done!
Thank you all for your love and support,
Bianca & Alex
