What is Ghana Medical Help?
Ghana Medical Help (GMH) is a registered charitable organization based out of Toronto, Canada. Since 2010, GMH has been working with local health care professionals to improve health outcomes for marginalized communities in northern Ghana.

What is this campaign for?
Over the past 8 years, Ghana Medical Help has enabled 10 of the 14 district hospitals in the most underserved regions of Ghana to fulfil their fundamental equipment needs and prevented countless tragedies as a result.
The purpose of this GoFundMe campaign is to elevate the 4 remaining hospitals to national equipment standards and enable them to provide basic health services to the 300,000+ people who rely on them for critical care.

Why is it urgent?
Ghana experiences an annual malaria "season" that occurs from June to August, when malaria cases skyrocket and the demand on hospital resources is at an all-time high. The 4 target hospitals of this campaign are newly established and only began receiving GMH support in 2017. They do not currently have sufficient resources to effectively manage the patient load of the upcoming malaria season. However, with our help to fulfil their fundamental equipment needs, they can protect against highly preventable malaria deaths, in particular among the most vulnerable populations: children and pregnant women.
Malaria was responsible for 429,000 deaths worldwide in 2015, and 70% of all malaria deaths were children under 5 years old (WHO, 2015). In Ghana, more than half of all hospital admissions among children under 5 are due to malaria infections (NDPC, 2015).

Okay, it's an important cause, but why should I support GMH in particular?
GMH has almost a decade of experience operating successful health care programs in Ghana.
On-site research ensures GMH programs address real needs and enables the programs to evolve as required to have the maximum impact. By directly engaging local health care providers and community leaders in all aspects of designing and implementing programs, we emphasize local ownership and promote capacity-building to create systemic change.
This method ensures that the programs will ultimately operate independently, without the need for intervention.

And what will $28,000 accomplish specifically?
This amount will cover the purchase and delivery of the highest priority life-saving equipment requested by the 4 hospitals. This includes devices that deliver oxygen and medications, devices that monitor patient vital signs (heart rate, temperature, blood pressure), and devices that sterilize equipment. All equipment is brand new and acquired from vetted medical equipment manufacturers. The quantity of devices to be donated is determined by comparing the current inventory of the hospitals to the minimum number required to meet national standards. The total cost of acquiring, shipping and delivering that quantity of equipment is estimated at $28,000.
