My name is Sungjin Park, a Korean American Chicago resident and a small business owner’s son.
20 years ago we moved from South Korea and brought our entire life to this country. My dad went from CEO/Founder of a manufacturing company in Korea to a garbage guy, flower delivery guy, sushi chef, and more. Their goal was to provide for my brother and I, and that they did.
My parents have owned Glory Beauty Supply for the past decade. It has been a rough road as is. Brick and mortar businesses have been on a downward trend, and the financial crisis in 2008 evaporated and most of their life savings and investments, but they still fought through the what we thought to be the toughest times.
On May 31st 2020, during the Riots that broke out in Chicago, the store was looted. Our loss is estimated to be close to 95,000 USD.
I hesitated to open up a GoFundMe page because they want to self sustain and have pride in their ability to do so. However, seeing how helpless and hopeless they were today, I asked if they would be okay with receiving help from my friends, and they agreed, that they are down to nothing at this point.
I recognize, the suffering of our black brothers and sisters, I cannot imagine what you had to go through and what your family and ancestors had to fight through. I feel for your daily struggles and that pain, I wish we can diminish that for you in our generation. I do not want this to take away from that cause as it is a pain that is much greater than what our family went through this week. However, we still feel the sting.
Insurance will only cover 16,000 USD and there is a 10,000 USD deductible, which means we are only expecting 6 grand at this time. The damage and losses far exceed this amount and I don’t think they can make it without some help. I personally am helping out financially but the help would be much more impactful with small contributions from a bigger group.
Friends, any donation will be so appreciated and never forgotten. Our goal is 20,000 USD and all the proceeds will help them pay rent, bills, merchandise invoices and rent for a new apartment in a safer neighborhood. Thanks for all your support.
