In the UK, we may have our own opinions about the success of the financial support system available for artists, groups, and individuals (not working in the arts). That said, in other nations around the world it is likely to be far more bleak. 

A small collective of Carnival-inspired folks have decided to fundraise for projects we are aware of working in communities in Brazil. These include principally a number of the Maracatu Nações in Recife; money raised here will be divided between the communities connected to various Maracatus & Community Groups. 

All money raised will be spent on essential products such as food and hygiene products to help families who are struggling at this difficult time. Due to the current extremely high exchange rate, just a small amount of £ or € goes a very long way in Brazil right now.

We thank all those who are able to donate to help keep these people safe and well!
We are seeing if we can also arrange some learning experiences as an ongoing programme, but that will take a little time to set up, and also will not be possible during Covid-19 restrictions. We will also donate some funds to several small community groups and community leaders in Recife and São Paulo who are very switched on to where funds may also be best distributed.

For me personally, this is an opportunity to support projects and cultural groups in Brazil who have shared with us so much of their knowledge, stories, and life changing experiences over the years. 

This is an ever-evolving conversation, and so a complete list of those organisations will not be published in advance as we want to be open to supporting a number of organisations. 

The main administrator for this fund will be me, Holly Prest, in collaboration with Jackson and Jake of Afon Sistema, and Lizzie Ogle of Baque Luar. We thank you in advance for your trust that 100% of your much needed donations will go to well-deserving organisations.
