Global Waste Pickers Day Program

Greetings from TakaNiAjira Foundation! We are raising funds for our Global Waste Pickers Day Program 2022-2023. Global Waste Pickers Day is a date set on the 1st of March every year to celebrate, recognise and appreciate waste pickers and waste workers around the world.

This day became a global day to honour these groups by carrying out different activities related to recycling and to recognise waste pickers' work. These groups play a vital role in the recycling and waste management sector. However, their rights and work status are constantly at risk around the globe. This day started to send the world a message, Recycling without waste pickers is garbage! Our vision of this Global Waste Pickers Day Tanzania 2023 is to recognise and appreciate our waste pickers and waste workers.

In 2023, Tanzania will show its dedication to celebrating waste pickers globally by celebrating the efforts we have made to recognise and support our waste pickers. We launched our program on the 2nd of November 2022 and will host several events and activities around community awareness raising, education and capacity building of the waste pickers and many more!

Currently, we are in the second phase of our program, where we are conducting a survey through questionnaires as well as registration of Waste Pickers and Workers via a digital platform. This activity has been designed to understand the needs and challenges faced by waste pickers and waste workers in Tanzania. With this information, we can support this community's needs more accurately. This Research and Registration phase will take place until January 2023.

Next, we will host a Community Service Day in February, where we will bridge the gap between the community and waste pickers by providing free services for example healthcare check ups, haircuts, sports and entertainment.

On 9th of March 2023 will be the event day where we celebrate and share our achievements with the community.

Additionally, we are planning a National Solid Waste and Waste Pickers Stakeholders Forum that will bring together stakeholders in the solid waste sector, waste pickers and waste cooperatives to discuss the current challenges and the way forward.

These funds will go towards several aspects of this program within the theme of Recognise | Formalise | Value Waste Pickers and Workers. Let's show our appreciation for these environmental HEROES and support them however we can!
