Global Knowledge Academy Fire Relief
On October 10, 2020, a large fire broke out at the campus of Global Knowledge Academy, in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines. The GKA staff was still inside the office when a concerned citizen ran in and warned the staff that their building was on fire. Everybody made it out safely but they were not able to save anything. The lady definitely saved their lives and we are very thankful that everybody is safe.
Global Knowledge Academy is a family-owned college in Angeles City that offers hotel and restaurant services and computer programs with very affordable tuition fee. This school is not that big and does not make that much money, just enough to provide its students with quality education and a fun and exciting college experience.
GKA was founded by Mr. Crizalde Alegre in 2006, alongside his wife, my Aunt (my father’s youngest sister), Mrs. Yolanda Santos Alegre. Throughout the years, my father and his other siblings also became share holders and helped GKA to get where it was before the fire.
The entire campus is a total loss, along with the college’s possessions. All the offices, classrooms, computer laboratories containing over a hundred computers, all of hotel and restaurant services related educational items and all important documents are gone. The school is still responsible in providing education to its scholars, and at the moment, the staff is using the Alegre residence as an office. We are able to offer some online courses for our students but ultimately, we have almost 300 students whose education is on hold because of this tragedy.
We are not ready to let go of Global Knowledge Academy, we want to start over and rebuild our school and continue doing our very purpose – to provide quality education at very affordable cost.
The money that we raise will be used to rebuild the school. Technical Educational and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) of the Philippines advised the school to reapply for a new license and rebuild a brand new school. The fund will also be used to provide salary to GKA staff and faculty. We are determined to rebuild our college but more importantly, we are eager to continue educating our students and help them have a brighter future.
I personally studied at GKA for 6 months while my family and I were waiting to move to Canada back in 2015. I witnessed how much the faculty and staff care for the students and treated them as their family. My aunt was devastated to have witnessed the school that she built with her husband 14 years ago turn into ashes. But despite this, we are beyond grateful that everybody is safe and alive and we believe that it is possible to get back up and rebuild our beloved college.
Our gofundme page now says “on behalf of Ceceilla Santos”, my mom, who is also one of the GKA Board of Directors. She will be the one withdrawing the donation that we have collected through gofundme, as we need an account in Canada in order to make withdrawals. My mom will then transfer the donation to the GKA’s bank account in the Philippines.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for any help and support that you would provide, whether it be by donating, sharing this gofundme link, or including us in your prayers during these difficult times.
