Glioblastoma (Grade IV), help Delia Ortiz Mejia

Hello, my name is Alex, and I am starting this fundraiser for my Aunt Delia, who lives in Peru.

In February 2022, Delia began to experience symptoms that she thought were due to sleep deprivation as she had been caring for her mother and stepfather who are in their 90s, throughout the pandemic. However, it quickly became apparent that Delia was dealing with Glioblastoma when scans revealed her aggressive brain tumor. Soon after, she was struggling to walk as the tumor was affecting her ability to move. As with all forms of cancer, this came as a complete shock to Delia and our family.

In March, Delia had emergency cranial surgery in Lima, which was successful! She was released from the hospital one week later and started chemotherapy and radiation treatments in April in hopes of keeping the tumor from re-growing. There were a few months that Delia was able to get outside and spend time with her family and church community. Those months were very special, and she even stated that she did not know how much so many people loved her. Aunt Delia is a very important person to many in her church community, to our family and especially to me since she has always been there for me. She has spent her life helping others, giving love and advice to anyone who needs it, and she was always praying for others.

Unfortunately, recent scans revealed that there had been a re-growth of tumors in her brain. Then, two weeks ago she suffered a grand mal seizure that left her unable to swallow. The hospitals were overwhelmed and since the tumors had returned, they told us that there was nothing that they could do. We had to focus more on her comfort and found a private doctor that can make home visits. A feeding tube was placed in her nose so that she can now get her medications and nutrition. She has since developed pneumonia and again, the hospital could not admit her and was sent home with antibiotics and oxygen. We had to hire an aide to help our family to assist her but we need more experienced help at this end stage of her illness. Our family has been taking turns caring for Delia around the clock and due to this, immediate relatives have not been able to work as much and medical expenses has been accumulating. As hard as it is to ask for help, we have decided it is time to do it.

We will use any funding received to put towards care and medical expenses. Delia’s strong faith in God and her church community have helped her to stay positive throughout the past six months. We have been grateful for this support and for all of the prayers.

Please, contact me if you have any questions or would like more updates. Many thanks to everyone for your support during this difficult time.
