Glenn Ah Sam’s fight against Glioblastoma
Donation protected
On September 4, 2020 Glenn Ah Sam started to experience weakness on his left side and sought out medical attention. Through an MRI, it was discovered that he had two brain tumors. He underwent a biopsy along with a 2 week stay at Rehab of the Pacific to help him regain his strength. On October 7th he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, which is, the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. On October 20th, a follow-up MRI revealed the two original tumors had increased in size and a third tumor had formed. Radiation is the recommended treatment which he will start on November 4th Monday through Friday, one-hour appointments for three weeks. In a short period of time, Glenn has lost function of his left side and is unable to walk or stand on his own. Due to his inability to care for himself, he is now receiving 24/7 care at home. We have hired a transport service to take him to and from his follow up appointments and his daily radiation treatments.
Delicacy of Glenn’s health compelled his retirement on October 9th, 2020 where he was a Boilermaker/Machinist at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for the past 44 years.
Outside of work he’s always been a supporter of youth programs since the 1980’s. He began by managing his daughter Jennifer’s Bobby Sox team and concurrently managed his son Glenn Jr’s PONY team. Both participated in numerous state and national tournaments. Glenn continued with COYBL “Central Oahu Youth Baseball League” for years after his children completed their eligibility, as Board President & Board Member.
Since the resurgence of Babe Ruth Baseball in Hawaii in 1999, Glenn tirelessly devoted countless hours of dedication, which resulted in the growth from meager beginnings of two teams to over 90 teams annually. But he did not stop there, he also spent nearly 20 years of officiating in community leagues, high school baseball and softball, adult leagues, in addition to managing and scheduling umpires, which he finally retired from in 2012. In between all of that, he was a great mentor to Coach Rose Antonio, Head Coach of the Mililani High School Varsity Program. Additionally he ran the prestigious Mililani Trojan Classic Tournament for the past 20 years.
For the past 40 plus years of dedication, it doesn’t go unnoticed, Glenn’s passion and big heart to provide the children of Hawaii a safe environment to develop character and sportsmanship. It also shows his dedication paid off by the tremendous and steady growth of the programs.
We humbly ask for your support for Glenn Ah Sam, a valued community leader, a true friend to all that know him, and most importantly, a devoted husband, father, and grandpa. Funds raised will go towards assisting in medical bills after health insurance coverage, due to emergency room visits, rehabilitation, radiation treatments, medication, along with in home medical supplies, equipment, and transportation fees.
The Ah Sam family deeply appreciates the love and support we have received thus far. There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by without a friend or family member calling, texting, or stopping by to show their love for our father. Thank you for your continued love, support, and prayers.
