The Cycle-a-thon was inspired by Year 12 student, Blaise Miller Hill, following discussions about fundraising for a worthy cause prior to leaving school.
Blaise has been involved with the voluntary organisation Waves of Wellness (WOW), which provides support through surfing opportunities to people with mental health issues and she suggested this would be a good cause for the class. Through discussion, the class agreed to hold a Cycle-a-Thon, where they will keep a number of exercise bikes running non-stop for 24 hours. A big thank you to Vision Personal Training in Chatswood for lending us their stationary bikes.
The fundraising got off to a blazing start last week with the Fluro Thursday. We raised $500, which was so inspiring. Our sponsorship is slowly growing, but we have a long way to go until we reach our target. Many thanks to those families who have sponsored the students so far and also to the extended family members and friends who have jumped on board.
Senior students will be cycling non-stop in the school’s hall, beginning at lunchtime on Friday 15 September until lunchtime on Saturday 16 September.
Wearing their most outrageous fluoro costumes, three teams of six to eight students will race against each other and a team of teachers to cycle the furthest over the 24-hour timespan.
They will sleep in the hall, preparing their own meals, and playing music and board games when they are not on the bikes.
Their target of $5000 will pay for 10 people to take the Waves of Wellness four-week WOW Surfing Experience (WOWSE) learn-to-surf program.
