Glen Smith Medical Expense

Beschermde donatie
Hello, Glen Smith is my Father-in-Law, more like a second father, mentor, friend, brother, etc. Glen has impacted many people all over this great nation, from New Hampshire to California. Most of you coming here know him and can attest to his character and marvelous personality!

On May 19, 2022, Glen was taken to the Emergency Room for what he thought were severe signs and symptoms of a stomach virus. There it was discovered that he had an 8 mm obstructive kidney stone. A simple procedure was planned to remove the stone. During that procedure, it was discovered that the kidney was infected, which caused Glen to go into Septic Shock. His fever was elevated to 106 and his blood pressure became dangerously low as a result he remained on life support for several days while a medical team put a plan of care in place. The doctors informed the family that he had a 20% chance of making it through this illness alive.

True to his character, he fought back and came off of the ventilator on the 5th day.

As a result of the Septic Shock, his body developed multiple blood clots shutting off the circulation to all four of his limbs. His kidneys had shut down as well so he was placed on dialysis. Despite the attempts to restore blood flow to all four limbs the medical team decided it would be best to amputate the parts of the limbs that were dying. During that surgery, it was discovered that there was dying muscle also. The medical team spoke to the family and it was decided that for him to medically stabilize additional amputations had to take place. This was not an easy decision, Glen's faith was strong and his outlook was that "God allowed him to borrow those limbs and if God wanted them back the doctors could take them." So, Glen went back to surgery and underwent amputation of his left leg, below the knee; his left arm above the elbow; all of his right toes were amputated; his first knuckle on his right thumb, first and second knuckle on his right index, middle & ring finger was amputated as well. His right pinky finger remains well and intact. Eventually, his kidneys started performing properly and he was able to stop the dialysis.

Due to the nature of Glen's illness and the subsequent surgeries, Glen requires 24/7 care. His wife Joyce and his daughters Ginny & Hope stayed at the hospital for the first two weeks of this illness. They then rotated days to ensure Glen received the care he needed. They were supported by his mama Mrs. Fannie, his siblings, Sharon, Waylon, Regina & Rebecca as well as other friends & family.

Glen continues to be both a medical miracle and an inspiration to his medical team, family and friends. He is currently recovering at home with the daily support of his family. He is receiving both Occupational & Physical Therapy at home. He was recently fitted for two compression stockings to start the long process of prosthetics.

This Go Fund Me is being set up to assist with expenses not reimbursed by insurance. All donations will go towards the prosthesis necessary for him to become independent and specifically for his right limbs as well as other equipment in his home to assist him daily. We do not know all of the costs for his needs at this time, only some preliminary numbers from a brief evaluation in the hospital.

Glen and our family are truly grateful for the outpouring of support from everyone. Our prayer remains as a family that our story will encourage each person who hears it and that the Lord will bless you and your family the way HE continues to bless us.
