Hello!

We are Sheridan College film students looking to complete our thesis short film. We are all set to go with our script, concepts, and crew - the only thing left is fundraising for the materials we need in order to shoot! As students, we are grateful for the guidance of our faculty, access to the school's facilities, and fellow students in support of completing our film - however, there is a lot we still have left to cover.

The Synopsis:

Two childhood friends in Vietnam are suddenly torn apart when Mia leaves without a goodbye. Years later, they reunite in Canada, where Mia offers Mouse a place to stay. But the bond they once shared is tested by the women they’ve become. When an argument finally cracks the tension, the truth behind Mia’s departure comes out, and Mouse learns she was the reason behind it all. This story, told through two intertwined timelines, unravels the mystery behind their separation piece by piece by weaving childhood memories with adult displacement.

More About the Film:

Glass Houses is an intimate and poignant portrayal of how childhood friendships can be tested by time, distance, and the complicated realities of immigration. Using a nonlinear narrative, we navigate through our characters' memories of each other and their experiences in their loss of childhood, relocation, assimilation, and search for belonging. We explore the complexities of immigration, diving into both the similarities and the differences between those who choose to leave their homeland, and those who are forced to do so. This film is for people of diasporas across all generations, for anyone who has undergone dislocation, and for those who understand the loss of having a close bond with someone become severed.

We believe this story is especially relevant now as global migration and cultural displacement becomes a journey more and more people are taking on worldwide, by choice or by force, and its reshaping of both individual and collective identities. In a country like Canada where so many carry immigrant narratives, these stories are especially relevant and important. Based on our own lived experiences of first, second, and third generation immigrants ourselves, we offer a story that many will relate to universally through its specificities. With this film, we seek to answer the question: when we leave home, what do we carry with us, and what do we leave behind?
