Myself and my dad will be joining Sir Chris Hoy on the 7th of September riding in the Tour de 4 fundraiser event in Glasgow. The Tour De 4 aims to challenge perceptions about a stage 4 cancer diagnosis and raise vital funds for cancer research.
Back in 2017 my dad was diagnosed with advanced metastatic prostate cancer. Since his diagnosis he has received treatment from the NHS. Post-diagnosis my dad hasn't let his conditon stop him from doing the things he enjoys & makes the most of his life, despite not always being easy.
My dads resilience, his unwillingness to let his diagnosis define him, the support from my mum Lorna, and the fantastic treatment he has received from the NHS means he has been able to have quality of life, even after 8 years post-diagnosis.
One of the key themes of Sir Chris' aims for the Tour De 4 is about the perception of stage 4 cancer. I feel like my dad is a great example that can change perception for others. Despite a devastating diagnosis he has shown that you can have many years of enjoyment and adventure to look forward to.
My dad is an inspiration to me, and I hope to other people who are diagnosed with cancer to give hope and show that years of good quality of life are possible in the years ahead.
The money raised from this fundraiser will be going to Prostate Cancer Research to continue the fantastic research and development of treatment for those with cancer. The treatment my dad had received from the NHS has been incredible, without which he wouldn't be here today, and hopefully this money will contribute to helping others.
Thanks for reading x
