In Loving Memory of Abuela Gladys Maldonado
On May 29, 2026, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Gladys Maldonado, passed away at the age of 86.
Gladys was born in Puerto Rico and faced hardship early in life. After losing her parents as a child, she learned resilience, strength, and perseverance at a young age. Those qualities would define her throughout her life and shape the family she loved so deeply.
As an adult, Gladys made New York City her home, settling in the Bronx, where she became the heart of countless family gatherings and celebrations. For many years, her home was the place where family and friends came together every Christmas. Her door was always open, her table was always full, and her presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of belonging to everyone around her.
Gladys also spent many years working at the historic Johnny's Reef in City Island, serving food and welcoming generations of customers. Through her work, she interacted with countless people from across New York and beyond. Many knew her for her kindness, her work ethic, and the genuine care she showed to others.
She leaves behind three loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and a community of people whose lives were touched by her generosity and spirit.
This year has been especially difficult for our family. Earlier this year, we also lost Gladys's eldest son, Michael Lopez. While we have been able to cover a portion of the funds needed to honor her life and provide her with a dignified burial, the proximity of these losses has created an unexpected financial burden.
We are humbly asking our family, friends, former coworkers, neighbors, and community members to help us cover the remaining burial and funeral expenses. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease this burden and allow us to focus on celebrating Gladys's life and legacy.
If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share this page and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for helping us honor the life of a woman who spent her years caring for others, bringing people together, and creating a home filled with love.
Rest in peace, abuela. Your love and strength will live on through all of us.
