On Tuesday, April 14th, 2021. Our mother Gladis Mopecha was murdered. She left behind me, Leon Mopecha, my brother, June Mopecha, and our father, Jimmy Mopecha. My father is an Assistant Professor at Delaware Valley University. My mother was an ESL teacher for elementary and middle school. I am a few weeks away from graduating university. My brother is starting his first full time job since he graduated. None of us could have been ready for this, financially or emotionally. We were barely staying afloat. This is not just a death, but a MURDER. Our mother was shot multiple times, and her home in Arizona is now a crime scene. My mother, was a proud African immigrant from Cameroon who came and got her master's in Education from ASU. She loved living and working in Arizona and raised us there. She was active as a teacher in her relationships with her students and within the larger African immigrant community. She was a passionate leader in organizations, always advocating for herself and other. Growing up I always knew she wasn't my "Mummy" alone, because many adults she couldn't have given birth to also called her "Mummy". She took on everyone's pain, held space in her heart for everyone...to the point that it took her own life.
My brother, father, and I live in Pennsylvania. We need to fly cross country, back and forth until everything is settled. My mother left behind an entire house of memories and items to sort through. There is a police investigation, flight costs, I assume a trial, other funeral arrangements, and of course home cleaning and item disposal.
**Our immediate need is just for me and my brother's plane tickets to Arizona this weekend. Any additional donations will be wholly contributed straight to the situational costs, and this bio will be updated as needs evolve to clarify.
